Vivian Dawson Marvray: A Legacy of Service, Leadership, and Love
Vivian Dawson Marvray ( March 25, 1962-March 21, 2024) was born, in Pensacola, Florida. Vivian was raised by her grandparents, the late Edward and Marie Dawson.
Vivian’s spiritual journey began early. She accepted Christ and was baptized at Greater Little Rock Baptist Church in Pensacola. Her faith remained a cornerstone of her life, guiding her through a lifetime of service and commitment to her community.
Vivian’s early years were marked by academic and athletic excellence. She graduated from Escambia High School in 1980. She was a saxophonist in the school band and a member of the varsity basketball team. Her talent on the court earned her a basketball scholarship to Selma University. She continued her education at Lemoyne-Owen College before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Psychology from Troy State University in 1994. She furthered her studies at the University of West Florida, where she received a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction.
Vivian met André B. Marvray I., the love of her life in high school. The couple married on June 28, 1986, and their union was blessed with two children, André B. Marvray II and Knikira Marvray. In 2003, the Marvray family relocated from Pensacola, Florida, to Hoover, Alabama, where they became active members of the Sixth Avenue Baptist Church. Vivian's dedication to her faith was evident in her roles as a Deaconess, Vacation Bible School teacher, and Sunday School IT Coordinator for the Holmes Crusaders for Christ.
Vivian’s professional life was as dynamic and impactful as her personal one. She became served as the Diversity Coordinator at Pensacola High School. Her passion for technology and education led her to employment with Montevallo Middle School in 2005, where she designed and developed the school’s first technology program. Her innovative approach included partnering with local businesses and the corporate community to enhance academic success. Vivian’s career culminated as an Academic Curriculum Coordinator in Birmingham at Virginia College, where she created and improved over 30 online courses, impacting countless students.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Vivian was deeply committed to community service. She was initiated into Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated®, Alpha Delta Chapter, in the Spring of 1981 at Selma University. She became a Life Membership in 1998. From 2008-2014, Vivian served as the 21st Alabama State Director, where she introduced numerous initiatives, including the formation of Area Coordinators and the creation of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Alabama State Association Foundation Scholarship. Her leadership extended to the regional and national levels, where she served in various capacities, including March of Dimes Coordinator and Financial Secretary of the Southeastern region.
Vivian’s legacy also included her contributions to the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). She served two terms as President of the NPHC of Birmingham, chartered the NPHC at the University of Montevallo, and later established the NPHC of Shelby County, serving as its first and third President. She was an active member of the NAACP, The Girl Friend’s®, Incorporated, and a charter member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women® Central Alabama chapter.
Vivian Dawson Marvray leaves behind a legacy of love, leadership, and service that will continue to inspire all who knew her. Her memory will be cherished by the countless lives she touched through her work and dedication.
