History

The Alabama Zeta Foundation was born during the tenure of Soror Vivian Dawson Marvray, the 22nd Alabama State Director of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Alongside the other incorporators, Soror Marvray aspired to create a sustainable vehicle that would provide scholarships for undergraduate Sorors and enhance support for Alabama communities through statewide Z-HOPE projects.

In 2010, that vision became reality with the official incorporation of the Foundation. The founding incorporators and directors—Mary Foster, Bonnie Banks, Ricky McClure, Vivian Dawson Marvray, and Calandra Jones McDonald—laid the groundwork for an enduring legacy rooted in scholarship, service, and community uplift.

Since its inception, the Alabama Zeta Foundation has been a source of pride and progress, providing:

  • Support for the Z-HOPE Initiatives of the Alabama State Association of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

  • Scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning to attend colleges and universities in the state of Alabama

  • Scholarships to currently active undergraduate members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. enrolled at Alabama colleges and universities

After the passing of Soror Vivian Dawson Marvray, Soror Calandra Jones McDonald led the reorganization of the Foundation, ensuring its continued growth and strength. In honor of Soror Marvray’s legacy, the Board approved a one-time $5,000 scholarship for the 2024 Awards Luncheon and advanced several key initiatives, including a year-end audit, funding for the 2024 Z-HOPE project, and the creation of a new website.

The Foundation remains committed to strong governance, with officers serving as President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Members, elected or appointed in accordance with the By-laws. Through this structure, the Alabama Zeta Foundation continues to empower scholars, uplift communities, and advance opportunities for success across the state of Alabama.
